Ramasun 7th
The United States Air Force had a strong presence for a whole decade from the mid 60’ to the mid 70’s in Udon Thani. It was overtly a jumping off point to Vietnam and the USAF built an airbase that is still used to this day by Thai military. You will often see Willy’s Jeeps and even decommissioned Huey’s around the city. Udon Thani sprung up like an oasis amidst farmland due to the needs and wants of American GI’s and with them they brought a better standard of living. In the 90’s Udon Thani garnered a rather boring retiree ex-pat image due to many of said soldiers returning to spend the rest of their days here. As such for a decade or so the economy got another little push.
What is not talked about however is what was done on Ramasun 7th, it has been memorialized as a “listening post” where the United States would intercept signals and gather intelligence. That much warrants the fate of Ramasun 7th (in ‘77 of all years) however unsubstantiated and uncorroborated as these things tend to be, it was a rumored one of America’s infamous CIA black sites. The United States saw fit to destroy headquarters with explosives on its closing, burning any trace of what could have been.
