In the summer of 2017 David Roberts first visited Japan, and DRobertsPhoto is a direct reflection of his time there. Whilst he learned his photographic principles from the people he met, it was his his thirst for history that was the motivation to do so. He did not find belonging, but the peace of an adequate outsider. Origin stories are cliché, and photographers bios full of “Why I picked up a camera.” Yet if it was not for the environment that Japan provided, David’s photography would not be what it is today. It was not Tokyo or Osaka that he became besotted with, but the heartland of Gifu. 2027 marks ten years from that summer, and a return not only to Japan, not only to Gifu, but to a promise he made almost a decade ago; to walk The Nakasendo Way.
Unlike Discover Temples of Thailand or Discover Castles of Japan, the project is concepted as a closed-ended, fully-funded excursion that follows the principles of David Roberts’ proprietary Closed Loop Creative System, and targeting a post-social environment. The Nakasendo Way is not meant to become a monograph, nor coffee table book but as and end-cap for Ten Years of DRobertsPhoto: The Birth of Philosophic Documentarianism.
