Street vendors are not just part of the fabric of life here in Thailand but are an important part of the culture. I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with “Uncle” Joi, a popular papaya salad vendor here in Udon Thani city. He moved to the city from Roi Et around 15 years ago and spends six days a week 9am ‘til 4pm pushing his card around his route. Many of his customers wait for him to pass their business and a few even go out of their way to catch him on his route. The day we photographed Uncle Joi it was 41°C (105°F) and a few hours was enough not for just Dao and I, but our camera equipment too. Although shaded by his parasol, there is no denying this is not a job to be envious of.
